Leading with Purpose: How Johnny Russo Is Redefining Digital Transformation Through
Mindful Leadership
Inside the Vision of Lamour’s Chief Digital Officer and His Mission to Build High-
Performing Teams Through Innovation, Empathy, and Digital Excellence
In a business world defined by disruption, evolving technologies, and rising customer
expectations, leaders face a growing challenge: how to embrace rapid digital transformation
while still building meaningful human connections. For many executives, the race toward
innovation can overshadow culture, people, and purpose. But for Johnny Russo, Chief Digital
Officer at Lamour, success begins with something deeper, mindful leadership.
With more than sixteen years of experience in digital marketing, e-commerce, and brand
transformation, Russo has become a recognized force in driving innovation while helping teams
thrive. His philosophy goes beyond revenue growth and operational efficiency. For him,
leadership is about creating meaningful impact, inspiring people, and helping others unlock their
fullest potential.
At Lamour, a globally recognized apparel company, Russo is shaping digital experiences,
strengthening customer relationships, and leading transformative initiatives that place equal
importance on business performance and employee growth. His journey, however, was far from
conventional.
From Journalism Dreams to Digital Leadership
Growing up in Montreal, Russo initially envisioned a very different future. Sports and
storytelling fascinated him, and journalism seemed like the natural path. After graduating from
Concordia University with a Journalism degree, he hoped to build a career in media.
However, as the internet began reshaping industries in the early 2000s, opportunities in
traditional journalism became increasingly limited. What initially felt like a setback soon became
an unexpected turning point.
After relocating to Ottawa and taking a job in marketing simply to pay rent, Russo quickly
realized he had discovered a new passion.
“I fell in love with marketing almost immediately,” he reflects. “The ability to understand
consumer behavior, build brands, and create experiences fascinated me.”
Driven by curiosity, he immersed himself in books on branding, advertising, and business
strategy. Influential thinkers such as Jay Conrad Levinson and Seth Godin helped shape his
perspective on modern marketing and innovation.
His growing expertise eventually led him to Buffalo Jeans, where he managed digital operations
for the internationally recognized apparel brand. It was here that Russo gained firsthand exposure
to retail, consumer behavior, analytics, and the fast-paced evolution of digital commerce.
Yet another pivotal moment awaited him.
Taking Risks That Shape Leadership
Career-defining growth often requires uncomfortable decisions, and for Russo, one of the biggest
came in 2016.
Despite having a comfortable life in Montreal, he made the difficult decision to relocate to
Calgary to join Mark’s and the Canadian Tire Corporation, one of Canada’s largest retail
organizations.
The move meant leaving behind family, friendships, and familiarity for a city where he knew
virtually no one.
“It wasn’t easy,” Russo admits. “Some days were incredibly difficult.”
Yet the decision proved transformational.
Managing larger budgets, overseeing expansive teams, and navigating greater business
complexity accelerated both his professional and personal development. More importantly, the
experience strengthened his resilience and confidence as a leader.
The move taught him an essential truth: growth rarely happens inside comfort zones.
Today, Russo credits that chapter of his life for shaping the leader he eventually became,
someone willing to embrace uncertainty, take calculated risks, and continuously evolve.
Mindful Leadership: A New Era of Leading People
While digital innovation drives much of Russo’s professional life, his greatest passion remains
leadership.
Unlike outdated management models rooted in fear, control, or rigid hierarchy, Russo believes
modern leadership must prioritize empathy, communication, and trust.
This philosophy inspired him to author Mastering Mindful Leadership: 105 Ways to Level Up
Your Leadership and Become the Leader Your Employees Need You to Be.
The book reflects Russo’s belief that great leadership is no longer about authority, it is about
service.
He emphasizes the importance of creating environments where employees feel safe to speak
openly, make mistakes, and continuously learn.
According to Russo, one of the most important responsibilities of a leader is helping people grow
both professionally and personally.
Rather than focusing exclusively on business metrics, he encourages employees to reflect deeply
on their ambitions, challenges, personal development, and life goals.
Each year, team members are encouraged to evaluate areas such as emotional growth,
confidence, productivity, mindset, and career aspirations. Together, they establish actionable
goals and accountability systems designed to create lasting progress.
For Russo, leadership means coaching the whole person, not simply managing an employee.
“I want to help people become better, not only at work, but in life,” he explains.
This people-first approach has become central to how he builds high-performing teams.
Innovation Through Agility and Action
At Lamour, Russo leads digital initiatives across multiple brands and licensing portfolios,
managing everything from traffic generation and conversion optimization to customer experience
and business growth.
But while strategy matters, Russo believes execution matters even more.
“You can have the best strategy in the world,” he says, “but if there’s no action, it stays on
paper.”
His approach to innovation centers around agility, experimentation, and speed.
Rather than waiting for perfect conditions, Russo encourages organizations to embrace emerging
technologies proactively. Whether exploring AI-powered tools, e-commerce enhancements, or
customer personalization strategies, he believes businesses must remain curious and adaptable.
Artificial intelligence, particularly tools like ChatGPT, represents one example of how
organizations can improve efficiency and decision-making. Russo believes leaders should not
fear innovation but instead thoughtfully evaluate how technology can strengthen business
outcomes.
At Lamour, innovation means continuously asking important questions:
● How can the customer experience improve?
● What creates less friction in the buying journey?
● How can profitability grow without sacrificing trust?
By constantly testing, refining, and iterating, Russo ensures the business stays responsive to
shifting consumer needs.
The Five Pillars of Digital Transformation
For Russo, digital transformation is far more than a buzzword.
It is a structured process built around five foundational pillars:
1. Education
Continuous learning is essential. Teams must stay informed, share knowledge, and remain
adaptable in a rapidly evolving business environment.
2. Partners
True transformation requires strong partnerships. Agencies, vendors, and technology providers
should operate as long-term collaborators, not simply service providers.
3. Data & Change Management
Business decisions should balance instinct with data. Analytics help organizations navigate
change while minimizing uncertainty.
4. Culture
No transformation succeeds without the right culture. Organizations must embrace adaptability,
curiosity, positivity, and accountability.
5. People
Above all else, people drive sustainable growth. The right talent, empowered in the right roles,
creates lasting success.
This framework has become central to Russo’s approach to leading digital evolution across
organizations.
Balancing Leadership, Family, and Personal Growth
Despite overseeing demanding digital operations, Russo strongly believes professional success
should never come at the cost of personal fulfillment.
For him, work-life balance is deeply personal and highly intentional.
His mornings begin early with fitness, healthy routines, and family time. He prioritizes
meaningful moments with his children, Luca and Siena, whom he describes as his greatest joy
and life’s most important achievement.
Planning also plays a major role in maintaining balance.
Russo structures his weeks carefully, prioritizing critical tasks early and leaving room for
strategic thinking later in the week. By tackling major priorities upfront, he creates more space
for both productivity and personal life.
However, he believes balance looks different for everyone.
“There is no one-size-fits-all formula,” he explains. “You must define what balance means for
you.”
Creating a Legacy Beyond Business
When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, Russo’s answer goes far beyond professional
success.
For him, impact matters more than titles.
Whether as a father, leader, mentor, colleague, or author, his goal is simple: positively influence
the lives of others.
His book, leadership philosophy, and workplace culture all stem from one core mission, to help
people become better versions of themselves.
In a future increasingly shaped by technology, automation, and AI, Russo believes organizations
will still depend on one irreplaceable quality: human-centered leadership.
And as digital transformation continues reshaping industries, Johnny Russo is proving that
innovation and empathy do not need to exist separately. In fact, the strongest organizations may
be the ones led by people who understand that lasting success begins not only with technology,
but with people.
